About

Hearty Korean spot near Nakseongdae Station serving rich beef bone galbi stews, comforting yukgaejang, and Pyongyang naengmyeon.

Between Nakseongdae and Seoul National University stations, Geumyaok brings a meat-heavy, craft-focused sensibility to traditional Korean dining. Born as a sister brand to the area’s well-regarded cold noodle spot Geumyamyeonok, this bright and compact dining room caters equally to midday solo diners slurping noodles and evening tables lingering over simmering hot pots and soju. Meat is handled in-house daily, and the kitchen does not hold back on portions. The simmered kimchi jjim arrives practically concealed under stacks of thick-cut pork belly, brisket, and optional ribs; beneath, well-braised kimchi yields softly to chopsticks without losing its tender bite. For shared meals, the galbi jeongol—available in both clear and spicy broths—presents massive beef ribs layered with brisket, mushrooms, vegetables, and steamed king dumplings over a simmering stove. Diners can customize each bite using the crushed cheongyang peppers, perilla seed powder, and house dipping sauces set out at every table. Cold preparations show equal restraint and balance. The restaurant's Pyongyang naengmyeon delivers a deeper, more pronounced beef aroma in its broth than ultra-subtle heritage parlors, paired with springy buckwheat noodles and garnished with cold boiled pork and shank. It makes an approachable entry point for cold-broth novices, especially when matched with an affordable side of thinly sliced cold boiled pork (naengjeyuk) served alongside house-pickled mustard greens. Those after raw beef will find glossy platters of domestic beef tartare (hanwoo yukhoe) and fresh mungtigi (raw beef slices) served with salted sesame oil. Rounded out with deeply steeped galbitang, fiery yukgaltang, and warm boiled pork belly, Geumyaok avoids flashy culinary shortcuts in favor of cleanly made house condiments, honest broth, and substantial helpings of beef.
