Traditional Gangnam

About

Gaepo-dong staple serving whole chicken hot pot in a clean, comforting broth with in-house freshly made kalguksu noodles since 1994.

Operating near the National Gugak High School intersection in Gaepo-dong since 1994, Wonjo Dakhanmari anchors Gangnam’s chicken hotpot scene far from the dish’s traditional Dongdaemun strongholds. Flanked by sacks of flour stacked near the stairwell, this two-story neighborhood fixture has spent over three decades perfecting a straightforward ritual centered on clear poultry broth and house-made noodles. The core order scales neatly by head count: a whole bird for two, one and a half for three, and two for four. Simmered tableside alongside tender potato chunks, the chicken yields clean, unclouded soup that deepens as it bubbles over gas flames. While the poached chicken is exceptionally tender, the real centerpiece is the dipping sauce. Diners visit the self-serve counter to mix yellow mustard, soy sauce, and red pepper condiment, heaping the bowl with raw onions and fresh chives. Tangy and pungent, the sauce cuts through the chicken’s rich fats and elevates even the leanest breast meat. Tart dongchimi and well-fermented kimchi round out the metal tabletop setup. Dining here follows a strict three-act progression. Once the chicken and soft potatoes are picked clean, staff top up the pot with broth to boil the house-extruded kalguksu. Cut thick on-site, these wheat noodles simmer until chewy and silky, absorbing the concentrated chicken essence without dissolving into sludge. Skipping straight to the end is a misstep; true regulars save enough broth to stir in rice, cooking it slowly until it thickens into a savory, starch-rich dakjuk porridge. Crowds fill the first-floor wooden tables during peak lunch and dinner hours, while the second floor handles spillover gatherings. Tucked down a residential alley with a steep, narrow rear parking ramp, it remains a quintessential local haunt where families and longtime regulars gather for comfort food served without pretense.
