Stew Dongdaemun

About

A long-running chueotang specialty spot in Jangan-dong serving thick, finely ground mudfish soup with various homemade kimchis and sweet sikhye.

Tucked into a quiet alley off Baebong Intersection in Jangan-dong, Namwon Chueotang has anchored its Dongdaemun neighborhood since 2012. Recognizable by its weathered orange signage and seasoned cherry-wood interior, the dining room carries the unhurried warmth of a longstanding community staple, complete with roughly ten tables and a refrigerator where diners retrieve their own water and chilled hand towels. The kitchen keeps its focus razor-sharp, dedicating the menu to restorative pots of *chueotang* (mudfish soup), available either finely ground or with whole fish (*tong-chueotang*), alongside a hearty *ppyeo-haejangguk* (bone hangover soup). The signature ground chueotang arrives in a furiously bubbling earthenware *ttukbaegi*, thick and viscous from hours of simmering. Packed with tender greens, heaps of fresh chives, and domestic aromatics like garlic and onion, the broth leans moderately pungent and pleasantly spicy without overwhelming heat. Diners often swirl warm white rice directly into the thick stew, letting the dense broth cling to every grain. Accompanying the boiling stew is a generous spread of up to six banchan varieties dominated by vibrant, fermented staples: crunchy radish shreds (*musaengchae*), refreshing white kimchi (*baek-kimchi*), scallion kimchi (*pa-kimchi*), and crisp, freshly seasoned *geotjeori* that provides a lively foil to the rich, earthy soup. While the stew’s deep, unapologetic richness occasionally reveals a rustic, briny fish character, the crisp seasonal kimchis consistently cut through the weight of the bowl. After scraping the bottom of the hot earthenware pot, locals make a quiet ritual of drawing a complimentary glass of house-made *sikhye*. Sweet, cold, and traditional, half a cup provides the ideal sugary contrast to the peppery depths of the fish broth before heading back out past the neighborhood alleys.
