About
Casual Deungchon-dong rice bowl eatery featured on Alley Restaurant, serving affordable Chinese-influenced bowls with bold flavors.
Tucked away in Deungchon-dong, Gangseo District, near Jeungmi Station, Mijeon-ok is a modest rice-bowl haven with a dedicated following. Originally put on the map by Baek Jong-won’s *Alley Restaurant*, the eatery closed its doors for a period while the owner gained experience elsewhere before reopening in the neighborhood with the same familiar menu and comforting spirit. Step inside the small, unpretentious dining room, and the fragrant, telltale scent of mala spice immediately greets you. The atmosphere is quiet, welcoming, and delightfully suited for solo diners or local office workers rushing in during the weekday lunch hour. Service leans self-service—run by the owner alone—with a banchan bar stocked with yellow pickled radish and crunchy kkakdugi, alongside complimentary bowls of piping-hot, rich fish-cake broth. The compact menu focuses strictly on hearty, affordable rice bowls (deopbap). The standout is the Majang deopbap, an assertive dish evoking rustic home-style cooking with subtle mala heat running throughout, leaving a lingering warmth on the palate. Diners looking for a gentler or saucier alternative frequently gravitate toward the Mapo tofu deopbap, served generously with extra sauce on the side so dry rice is never an issue. When available during the earlier hours, the dongpo pork bowl (dongpayuk deopbap) arrives layered with thick, tender slabs of braised pork over a generous mound of white rice, though it tends to sell out before dinner. The menu is rounded out by pork bowls accented with shishito peppers. Curiously for a small rice shop, Mijeon-ok also offers a variety of drinks. Ordering an understated, moderately sweet milk tea proves to be a clever choice, functioning as an unexpected palate cleanser that cuts through the peppery, savory depth of the seasoned pork and spice-tinged bowls.
