Tucked into a residential stretch of Haengdang-dong near Wangsimni, Hamjibak is a neighborhood dining room sustained by local regulars and older residents seeking a reliable homestyle meal. Rather than catering to transient crowds, this low-key restaurant builds its reputation on warm, everyday comfort foods that feel plucked from a domestic kitchen. The kitchen works through an extensive roster of traditional stews and braises, spanning fermented soybean stews, kimchi jjigae, spicy stir-fried pork, and braised cutlassfish. Among them, the undisputed anchor is the cheonggukjang (fermented soybean paste stew). Unlike more pungent iterations, Hamjibak’s version avoids overly sharp, aggressive odors, delivering instead a nutty, savory broth loaded with whole soft beans, tofu, and kimchi. Ordered for a party, it often arrives bubbling in a generous shared earthenware pot alongside heaping bowls of rice. For pairs or groups, the dubu jeongol (tofu hot pot) is the other standout. Requiring a two-person minimum, the dish arrives overflowing with cut tofu and simmers right at the table over a portable gas burner; as the broth reduces, it develops a deep, concentrated savoriness.
