About

Classic Korean BBQ near Itaewon.

A second-floor room near Samgakji station, down the block from the presidential office, walls dividing the space into private compartments where no one sees you eat. Hyeondae Bongga serves 1++ hanwoo with no window to the street, no ambient soundtrack—just you and whoever you brought, a grill, and the smell of fat browning on steel. The exterior staircase gives nothing away; once you're inside, staff seat you in one of several rooms and close the door. Tables turn slowly here. Regulars reserve days ahead; weekday walk-ins occasionally work, but evenings and weekends require a phone call. The signature move is beef: sirloin for chew, tenderloin for melt, tosisal and jebichuri among the specialty cuts. Order both sirloin and tenderloin together and the contrast teaches you what marbling does—one dissolves before you can chew, the other releases juice the longer you work it. Staff will grill if you ask, but the protocol is to let the youngest at the table handle the tongs. Start with chadol to oil the grill, then work through the cuts. Between rounds, order either chadol doenjang-jjigae or kimchi-jjigae; both arrive with individual fried eggs, one per guest. The doenjang is salty, deep, laced with beef fat—closer to a stew than soup. The kimchi version skews sweet, a house quirk some guests love and others don't. Pair either one with bap and the room goes quiet for a minute. Call ahead, specify your party size, and expect to spend ₩70,000 per person for a full progression. Weekday lunch offers better odds if you're showing up without notice. No English menu, but pointing works. Cards only. Closed Sundays; break from 2 to 5 pm daily.

Local tips

  • Reserve in advance — this is a popular spot with limited seating in private rooms; weekends and evenings require early booking.
  • Order jjagalgi style (mixed rice) for jjigae dishes — staff will mix soup with rice for better absorption of flavors.
  • Arrive early for lunch or reserve for dinner; walk-ins possible only on slow days despite official reservation preference.
  • Pair 1++ grade sirloin and tenderloin together to experience contrasting textures — tenderloin melts softly while sirloin has satisfying chew.
  • Budget ₩700,000+ for group of 10; high-quality beef justifies premium pricing compared to standard Korean BBQ restaurants.
