Pub Gwangjin

About

A retro 1990s basement pub near Konkuk University, renowned for budget-friendly cutlets, nostalgic graffiti-lined booths, and late-night drinks.

Tucked midway between Konkuk University and Children’s Grand Park stations, Gwangjin-gu’s Gyeoul Nageune (Winter Traveler) operates in an enduring time capsule. Designated as a government-certified "Good Price" establishment, this basement tavern has anchored Hwayang-dong for over two decades, serving generations of local Konkuk and Sejong University students. Descending the stairs into the cellar reveals a split-level layout that feels part cozy hideout, part retro dungeon. Wooden steps creak beneath your feet as you climb to the upper loft, where dim, moody lighting, cushioned four-person booths, faux crackling hearths, and decades of layered guest graffiti preserve a distinct late-1990s aesthetic. The spot blurs the line between nostalgic *gyeongyangsik* (Western-style diner) and late-night *hof*, welcoming patrons strictly for dinner or for marathon drinking sessions until dawn. The kitchen turns out classic comfort fare centered around pork cutlets and hamburger steak. The hamburger steak arrives as two thick patties smothered in savory brown gravy, accompanied by two types of salad, kimchi, yellow pickled radish, rice, and crisp mini hash browns. Golden-fried pork cutlets (*donkatsu*) and breaded fish cutlets (*saengseonkatsu*) are served alongside hefty drinks in unpretentious glassware—water even arrives in rocks glasses. Equally legendary are the venue’s throwback beverages. The signature house-mixed cherry juice delivers a sweet, nostalgic kick without fizz, while the famously syrupy lemon soju provides an easy-drinking, deceptively potent alternative to cheap draft beer. Backed by generous four-hour table limits, accommodating group seating for ten or more in the loft’s rear nook, and prices largely untouched by modern inflation, Gyeoul Nageune remains an atmospheric neighborhood anchor where the charm lies in the scrawled memories covering the walls.
