About
Cozy, atmospheric hideaway bar tucked away inside Haebangchon's Sinheung Market, specializing in curated South African wines.
Tucked away in the rustic alleys of Haebangchon’s Sinheung Market, Springbok is an intimate second-floor hideaway dedicated to South African wines. Accessed through an unassuming, narrow entryway and up a steep flight of stairs, the walk-in-only bar feels like a secluded attic retreat. Run by a wine-specialist couple, the space balances a low-lit, quiet mood with hospitable warmth, featuring a long bar counter and just three small tables centered on conversation. When the weather permits, the prime window seats are opened up, looking out directly over the retro rooftops and market below. The beverage program focuses entirely on South African terroirs, spanning sparkling bottles, complex white blends like Lourens Family Wines’ Lindi Carien, rare bottles of Restless River Pinot Noir, and select pours of whisky. Because South African labels are uncommon across Seoul, the owners actively guide guests through the cellar, tailoring each pour to individual preferences for minerality, acidity, or body. Table snacks lean concise and deliberate, beginning with cracked whole macadamia nuts served in the shell. The kitchen turns out pairing-friendly small bites like smokey Cape burrata cheese, 18-month aged Comté served with sweet fig jam, marinated olives, beef jerky, and octopus avocado salad dressed in olive oil. Crisp truffle-salted french fries provide a textural foil for zesty white wines, while simple plates of cheese and fresh fruit round out the cellar selections. Uncluttered by heavy crowds and framed by warm ambient lighting, Springbok functions effortlessly as an unhurried, date-night spot or a relaxed nightcap venue above the bustling market.
