About
Sujebi in a clay pot. Insadong tourist favorite.
The signage out front is fading and the alley keeps curving, but if the neighborhood starts looking too worn to be right, you're close. Three generations have run this sujebi shop in a timber-lined room off the Insadong backstreets, and the drill hasn't changed: every order of regular or spicy sujebi comes with three or four oysters bobbing in the broth, no negotiation unless you ask for 굴 없이 when you order. The sujebi itself runs thin and wide, not the thick chewy kind — it goes soft fast in the milky anchovy stock that stays scalding because everything arrives in ceramic jars the kitchen fires before service. Groups ordering two or more of the same sujebi get one large communal jar; solo diners after 1:00 PM get small individual crocks. The perilla sujebi pulls more repeat orders than the clear-broth version, and the seafood pajeon crisps hard enough to stay crunchy under a mound of tangy golbaengi muchim if you're willing to order both and stack them. Weekends bring 30- to 40-minute waits after the 5:00 PM reopening; weekdays queue up fast after noon. Arrive before 12:00 or slip in during the mid-afternoon break. No reservations, no CatchTable — just a line outside when it's busy, though turnover runs quick since most people clear their jar and leave. The shop breaks from 14:50 to 17:00 on weekdays, 15:20 to 17:00 on weekends, and takes last orders at 19:50. Cash and card both work.
Local tips
- Arrive before 12:00 PM or after 5:00 PM to avoid 30-40 min waits; weekends especially busy after 5:00 PM opening.
- Order sujebi with family/friends (2+ servings) to get larger jars; single portions served in small ceramic jars.
- Request 굴 없이 (no oyster) when ordering if allergic—oysters included in regular and spicy sujebi by default.
- Pair with Dongdongju rice wine and Seafood Pajeon for complete traditional Korean experience; all dishes stay hot due to ceramic jarware.
- Walk-in only, no reservations (CatchTable/Naver not available)—queue forms outside during peak hours; rotation moves fast due to quick meal time.
