Cafe Seodaemun

About

Quiet Yeonhui-dong showroom and cafe offering curated vintage design objects, furniture, and single-origin filter coffees.

Tucked away along the residential fringes of Seodaemun’s Yeonhui-dong, Rough Gloss operates at the tranquil intersection of a design showroom and a micro-cafe. Conceived by an editorial designer who relocated the project from Yeonnam-dong, the sub-level venue trades the bustle of the neighborhood’s main cafe drag for a gallery-like calm. Potted greenery in stainless steel planters punctuates cool grey walls, framing curated vintage furniture, bespoke design objects, and retail goods from the owner's rough market and rough parts lines. Seating inside is deliberately sparse, counting just three tables alongside a small outdoor terrace that looks out onto the quiet sloped alleys of Yeonhui-dong. It is not built for lengthy study sessions, but rather serves as a reflective pause during an afternoon neighborhood walk. The drinks program is intentionally streamlined, eschewing espresso machinery entirely in favor of hand-poured filter coffee and a few select teas, including big hibiscus and peach oolong. Served unpretentiously in takeaway cups even for dine-in guests, the brew lineup features rotating single-origin beans such as Honduras Bañaderos Washed, Colombia Alexandria Geisha Anaerobic Washed, and the fruity Colombia Loco Series Watermelon Splash, with iced pours available for warmer days. Food options on-site remain minimal, generally limited to an occasional nut-studded financier displayed by the register counter, though the staff permits pastries brought in from nearby bakeries. Music is thoughtfully selected to match the understated interior, encouraging patrons to browse the objects on display or sit outside on the terrace when a cool breeze runs through the residential alley. Rough Gloss succeeds as a quiet design discovery—a place to inspect tasteful craftsmanship, sip a clean pour-over, and take in the slow residential charm of western Seoul.
