About

A comforting, long-running neighborhood bunsik spot in Haengdang-dong known for homemade red pepper paste, stone pot bibimbap, and generous portions.

Tucked near Haengdang Elementary School not far from Wangsimni Station, Jeil Bunsik operates as a true neighborhood fixture—the kind of classic, unassuming Korean snack counter that even made a screen appearance in the crime thriller film *The Gangster, The Cop, The Devil*. Out front, steam drifts from vats of simmering tteokbokki, bundles of sundae, and skewered fish cakes ready for quick stand-up bites. Inside, the space narrows to just four four-seat tables, making it a revered sanctuary for solo diners and locals slipping in for an honest, filling lunch. The heart of the kitchen lies in the proprietor’s hospitality and her house-made gochujang sauce, which anchors the entire menu. It forms the base for the rice-cake tteokbokki—stout, finger-length cylinders predominantly made from chewy rice flour, simmered into a mildly spicy, balanced glaze alongside tender fish cakes and crisp dumplings. Steamed sundae arrives with generous portions of liver and lung, complemented by coarse dipping salt or doused straight into leftover tteokbokki sauce. For noodle lovers, the chilled jjolmyeon tosses springy, thick wheat noodles with shredded fresh vegetables in an umami-rich, tangy sauce that cuts through richer fried snacks. Despite the deep roster of street classics, nearby workers and solo regulars routinely pack the tables for the bibimbap, particularly the dolsot (sizzling stone pot) version. Crowded with fresh, crisp greens and the signature homemade chili sauce, it remains the priciest offering in the house at just 8,000 won. Order a meal, and the owner often slides over a complimentary skewer of eomuk steeped in warm, clear broth. You can pack raw tteokbokki kits to cook at home, but sliding onto a stool for a heaped portion of rabokki or a crackling bowl of stone-pot rice captures the unvarnished spirit of Seongdong-gu comfort food at its best.
