Chinese Korean Seodaemun

About

A long-running, family-operated Chinese restaurant near Myongji University, known for freshly made dumplings and a well-regarded gan-jjajang.

In Seodaemun’s Namgajwa-dong, Jung Hwa Ru feels less like a polished destination restaurant than a neighborhood Chinese dining room with its own steady rhythm. Set along a quiet residential road, this old-school hwagyo-style restaurant is a place to settle in over a few dishes rather than rush through a meal. One visitor describes a family-run operation; another remembers the room as a welcome stop for a quiet drink and supper. The menu rewards sharing. Start with the gan-jjajang: its finely cut ingredients and gently moist sauce spread easily through the noodles, while a restrained, toasty wok aroma and mellow savoriness keep the flavor from turning heavy. It was the standout for one diner, who came specifically to try it. For a different sort of comfort, the hand-made fried dumplings are crisp outside and fragrant with a subtle hint of spice. They are closer to pan-fried gyōza than oversized, oil-soaked parcels, and make an easy companion to a drink. Jjamppong brings a warmer, more bracing note. The bowl described by a visitor held crab and vegetables in a lightly oily, spicy broth, with plenty of soft noodles—comforting rather than punishingly hot. If you prefer a spread of dishes, the thinly sliced five-spice pork is served with cucumber and firm aspic; the meat is tender and clean-tasting, with garlic and chili oil kept in the background. The spicy chicken, by contrast, is coated in a moist, savory sauce, with a noticeable doubanjiang character and a lingering fragrance of spices. Even the table details fit the unpretentious mood: one reviewer notes a house-made radish kimchi, briskly spicy and refreshing beside the usual pickles. Jung Hwa Ru’s appeal lies in these contrasts—quiet surroundings, familiar Chinese comfort food, and a few dishes with distinctive character. Come for the gan-jjajang, add dumplings or jjamppong, and let the meal unfold at an unhurried pace.
