About

Traditional jumak pub. Makgeolli and anju.

The owner brings a public rice bowl to your table, dumps in sesame oil and powdered seaweed, and stirs with a spoon until the grains glisten. This is how you finish dinner at 동강주막 — not by ordering fried rice, but by waiting for the signal. Once you've eaten most of your stewed fish or octopus, she'll shuffle over unprompted and mix the complimentary bibimbap tableside, sometimes folding in leftover sauce from your dish. Regulars know to leave a little broth in the pan. The signature dish is simmered flatfish (병어조림), an entire fish braised in sweet-spicy gochugaru sauce with potatoes soft enough to mash with chopsticks. But the menu oddity everyone orders is kim-mari, a 3,000-won roll that looks like dried seaweed around rice but hides a layer of soy-chili paste inside — one blogger called it more addictive than mayak gimbap. The octopus stir-fry comes with whole tentacles, live-caught that morning, and a mound of blanched bean sprouts already dressed in sesame oil so you can fold them into the red sauce. Between dishes, the free banchan is just silken tofu and a small dish of soy sauce spiked with minced fresh peppers. You take off your shoes at the door and sit at low tables under yellow bulbs, bottles piling up as the room fills with office workers and neighborhood couples. Come before 6 PM on weekdays for a table; after 7 PM, expect thirty minutes standing outside with the other groups. Weekends require a phone reservation. The place runs until 1 AM most nights, 10 PM on Sundays. No English menu, no parking lot — walk from Dongmyo Station exit 9 in under ten minutes or use the paid public lot across the street.
