Traditional Yeongdeungpo

About

Yeouido basement eatery renowned among local office workers for aged domestic kimchi, hot pot stews, and thick pork belly.

Tucked inside an older commercial building near National Assembly Station, Jangsujip caters directly to the rhythms of Yeongdeungpo office workers. With tight seating, brisk service, and an open kitchen, the basement dining room fills up fast with lunch rushes and post-work drinking sessions fueled by green bottles of soju. The house foundation rests on its kimchi, made in-house exclusively with domestic cabbage and chili powder rather than imported substitutes. One of the centerpiece offerings is the aged kimchi, fermented for up to three years to yield a deep, sharp, and refreshing acidity. When ordering the thick-cut native pork belly (tojong dwaeji samgyeopsal), slabs of meat sizzle on the grill alongside hefty piles of this aged kimchi, bean sprouts, and gosari (bracken). The rich pork fat renders down to fry the greens, creating a bite that cuts clean through the richness, especially when paired with side dishes like pickled perilla leaves and spicy shredded radish. During the lunch rush, the crowd pivots toward the tojong dwaeji kimchi jeongol. Arriving in bubbling stone pots, the stew simmers tender cuts of native pork with bean sprouts and house kimchi, resulting in a light, punchy broth that steers clear of cloying heaviness. Diners can order it with standard rice, but upgrading to the hot stone pot rice (dolsotbap) delivers glossy grains and the ritual of scraping scorched rice nu-rung-ji at the end, softened with warm water and eaten with aged gat-kimchi (mustard leaf kimchi). Other office staples include the stir-fried pork duruchigi and a tender steamed egg (gyeranjjim), served slightly soft in the center with a large spoon to stir and finish cooking at the table. Operating strictly on weekdays, Jangsujip delivers no-frills, deeply savory Korean comfort engineered for hard-working appetites.
