About

A long-running Gongneung-dong heritage eatery specializing in revitalizing black goat soup and comforting samgyetang.

Tucked along a quiet street across from the Gongneung 2-dong public health sub-center, Gwon Halmeoni stands as a true neighborhood fixture with a 45-year lineage. Now run by the founder’s son, this unpretentious dining room retains the warmth of an old-school Seoul institution, drawing multigenerational regulars, golfers, and locals who gather over restorative bowls and bottles of soju or wild ginseng wine (sansamju). Black goat (heugyeomso) is the kitchen's undisputed specialty, handled with the precision necessary to coax deep savor from a meat that easily challenges less experienced cooks. The heugyeomso-suyuk arrives gently boiled and thinly sliced, stripped of excess grease so only clean, nutty undertones remain. For dipping, the house provides a customized sauce—a fragrant mix of toasted sesame oil, seasoned red chili paste (dadaegi), coarse perilla seed powder, and minced garlic that you can blend to your taste. Beyond the suyuk, bubbling earthenware pots of heugyeomso-tang deliver a rich, nourishing punch that sustains patrons through the sweltering heights of boknal. For diners looking for an alternative to goat, the samgyetang quietly rivals the main event. Far from an afterthought, the whole young chicken is simmered in a time-honed stock developed over decades, offering a soothing broth that locals rely on when fatigue sets in. Meals are grounded by a generous spread of banchan that rotates regularly, often featuring fish cakes, crisp fresh peppers, onions, and sharp, refreshing yeolmu (young summer radish) kimchi that cuts through the robust meats. The dining room balances group gatherings and solo diners with equal ease, exuding a comfortable, down-to-earth rhythm where years of loyal patronage are on full display. With a rare three-car parking patch out front and an easy ten-minute stroll from Gongneung Station, it offers one of northern Seoul’s most grounded encounters with classic vitality cuisine.
