꽃피는산골

Pub Jongno

About

A traditional-style Korean pub near Jonggak, with a dim wooden interior, outdoor seating, and a broad makgeolli selection.

꽃피는산골 sits in Jongno’s after-work drinking orbit, close to both Jonggak and Insadong, and its appeal shifts with the weather. On a mild evening, the outdoor tables are the draw: one visit began with only a few set out and a quiet feel, then grew busier as people arrived and more tables appeared. Inside, the mood turns darker and more old-school, with a wooden, folk-tavern look and a split-level layout. It feels less like a polished dining room than a place made for lingering over drinks and sharing plates. Start with the complimentary banchan: tofu, kkakdugi and, in one account, bean-sprout soup. The tofu is simple and savory; the well-fermented radish brings a deeper, tangy bite. For something crisp, the minari-and-shrimp pancake is a strong choice. The herb is plentiful, the shrimp comes in manageable pieces, and the pancake was described as crisp without a heavy, floury finish. Seafood pajeon is another option, though one diner found it generous rather than restaurant-special, while the kimchi pancake disappointed for being mostly kimchi. Golbaengi muchim offers a livelier counterpoint: spicy, sweet-sour seasoning, chewy whelks and thin noodles that take up the sauce. Add noodles if you’re sharing. Other reported orders include egg custard, yukjeon, fish-cake soup and stir-fried octopus; the soup’s rich broth and varied fish cakes make it a fitting drink-side dish. These are companionable plates, not a claim to fine-dining precision. Makgeolli is part of the pleasure here. Bloggers mention more than ten varieties, including Ho-rang-i, Golmok, old-style, Jipyeong and house-style country makgeolli served by the pot in one- or two-liter sizes. Soju and beer-mixed drinks also appear at the table. Come for a relaxed round with friends or colleagues, choose a pancake and something tangy, and let the room fill around you. On a pleasant evening, the outdoor seats make the case for staying longer.
