About
A long-running, budget-friendly retro barbecue spot near Yonsei University, popular for foil-grilled pork belly and chilled bamboo-hollowed liquor.
Tucked into an alleyway near Yonsei University and Changcheon Methodist Church, Daemyeong Ggogi embodies the quintessential retro, low-frills campus hangout. Marked by a modest, weathered sign, the restaurant opens into an unexpectedly expansive dining space split into two distinct areas. The air is thick with sizzling pork and ambient chatter, packing in crowds of students drawn by remarkably wallet-friendly prices. The grill runs on nostalgia, with thick slices of lightly frozen samgyeopsal cooked over foil-lined grates. While reminiscent of classic naengsam (frozen pork belly), the cuts here retain a hearty, satisfying thickness that crisps along the edges while staying juicy. Alongside the meat, metal side dishes of kimchi, seasoned bean sprouts, garlic, and shredded scallions hit the grill, caramelizing in rendered pork fat. For a spicier finish, orders of gochujang samgyeopsal—slicked in a sweet and pungent red pepper paste—are a popular addition toward the end of a session. Beyond the pork, the signature draw here is daetongju, an 11-percent ABV bamboo-infused alcohol that drinks cleanly with a subtle sweetness akin to refined cheongju. It cuts through the rich, savory pork grease far smoother than ordinary soju, though its easy-drinking nature sneaks up quickly. Complementing the drinks are hearty pots of seafood-scented doenjang jjigae bobbing with tofu and vegetables, alongside a retro tin lunchbox—chueok-ui dosirak—filled with rice, fried egg, and kimchi ready to be shaken and mixed. Tables frequently receive small chilled bowls of canned yellow peaches, an icy, sweet palate cleanser served on the house. Daemyeong Ggogi offers little in terms of delicate ventilation, but for thick pork belly, rounds of bamboo liquor, and lively university-quarter grit, it remains a steadfast Sinchon fixture.
