About

Cozy noodle joint tucked on the second floor of Olympic Plaza Arcade, serving handmade kalguksu and spicy cold bibim noodles.

Tucked deep inside the labyrinthine corridors of the vintage Olympic Plaza shopping center, right across from Olympic Park in Songpa, Darang Sonkalguksu is a classic neighborhood nook prized by local apartment residents, office workers, and concertgoers alike. Situated at Unit 48 on the second floor, this tiny eatery operates with just four four-person tables. Sacks of flour stacked around the room tell you everything about the kitchen’s priorities: noodles are rolled and cut, dough is hand-torn, and dumplings are folded right on site. The house staple is the hand-cut noodle, available alongside chewy hand-torn suebi or combined in a comforting bowl of kaljebi. The broth is built on a deep, savory anchovy base that highlights the satisfying, wheaty flavor of the freshly kneaded dough. It comes served with punchy, crisp kimchi that cuts through the starch, while tabletop shakers of black pepper and vinegar let diners adjust seasonings to taste. During the sweltering summer months, regulars turn to the bibim-kalguksu. Tossed in a sweet and tangy chili sauce, served cold over ice, and accompanied by a small bowl of hot broth to cleanse the palate, these chilled, knife-cut noodles offer a remarkably springy bite. While the labor-intensive pan-fried mandu has sadly been retired from the menu, the kitchen continues to turn out comforting staples like ddeokmanduguk (rice cake and dumpling soup), cold naengmyeon, and sujebi using domestically sourced ingredients. The dining room is compact, tidy, and managed with quiet pride, marked by commendation certificates on display and disposable aprons ready for messy noodle slurping. Given the modest capacity, lunch hours often draw lines, so timing is key. Note that the shop rests on Sundays and Mondays, closing its doors early on service days once the evening rush subsides.
