Traditional Seodaemun

About

A spacious Korean dining hall near Sinchon Station, serving family-style dishes including sweet-potato dakbokkeumtang, grilled fish, and spicy stews.

In Seodaemun, Gang Sikdang is the sort of Korean dining room built for sharing: broad, roomy, and set up to accommodate groups as readily as a family table. It sits on the second floor, and the scale is part of the experience—less tucked-away neighborhood nook than spacious, practical place to gather over several dishes. The menu gives you plenty to put in the middle. A standout is the sweet-potato dakbokkeumtang, a chicken stew available bone-in or boneless, with a choice of mild or spicy. One visitor chose bone-in and mild: not entirely without heat, but manageable for someone who usually avoids spicy food. The sweet potato brings a softer, gently sweet counterpoint to the savory broth. For a quieter bowl, the seafood sundubu jjigae arrived with shrimp, crab, and clams in generous quantity, its silken tofu and broth described as mild and smooth. Other reports point to a table that can take on several appetites at once: beef bulgogi, grilled mackerel, seasoned raw crab, and braised silver hairtail all appear among the orders. The hairtail was noted for its substantial portion and plump flesh, without a fishy smell. That range makes Gang Sikdang an easy choice when one person wants stew and another wants grilled fish—or when the table would rather sample broadly than settle on one main. A set of side dishes comes with the meal, including kimchi, beans, stir-fried fish cake, bean sprouts, anchovies, and japchae. The sides drew mixed reactions: one diner found them a little salty, while another thought most were familiar and ordinary and found the japchae bland. Service speed is worth keeping in mind, too; one account mentions a wait of about 15 minutes despite an otherwise empty dining room. Come for the generous, shareable Korean spread and the room to settle in with a group. Gang Sikdang’s appeal is not a hushed, intimate mood, but a lively-feeling, capacious setting where a bubbling chicken stew can anchor the table while seafood tofu stew and fish dishes fill it out.
