About
Seolleongtang specialist. White ox bone broth.
The building is modern, all glass and clean lines, but the bones date to 1933. Jambaek-ok has occupied this corner two minutes from Seoul City Hall for over ninety years — through Japanese occupation, the Korean War, the bulldozing of old Seoul. A 1960 photograph near the entrance shows the original storefront, smaller, humbler. Now it's a two-story operation with enough tables to feed lunchtime office workers by the dozen, which it does, daily. Come for seolleongtang or doganitang, both built on bone broth that simmers around the clock in steel cauldrons. The kitchen mixes yesterday's stock into today's — a technique that compounds depth. The doganitang arrives milky-white, tender cartilage heaped over knife-cut noodles, the broth thick enough to coat a spoon but not heavy. Regulars ask for extra broth mid-meal; the staff obliges without fuss. On the table: rice in a metal bowl, well-fermented cabbage kimchi, pickled radish cubes sharp enough to cut the richness. A photo wall near the back shows decades of celebrity visitors, but the real crowd is the tie-loosened office set, eating fast, talking shop. The room is plain, bright, no attempt at atmosphere beyond efficiency. Weekday lunch between 11:30 and 2:00 draws the biggest crush; expect a wait or arrive after the break resumes at 5:00 p.m. No English menu, but the counter staff will point. Card-only, no parking. Reservations by phone for groups.
Local tips
- Arrive before 15:00 or after 17:00 to avoid the afternoon break (15:00-17:00 closed daily).
- Order doganitang or seolleongtang with suyuk side dish to enjoy varied textures and complement rich broth.
- This is Korea's 5th oldest operating restaurant (since 1933) — a Seoul Future Heritage site; expect crowds during lunch hours.
- Staff graciously serve extra bone broth alongside doganitang if requested; don't hesitate to ask.
- Reserve via phone (02-755-8106) for groups; walk-ins welcome but weekday lunch (11:30-14:00) can have short waits.
