Namwon Chueotang
남원 추어탕
About
A cozy Dongmyo neighborhood spot cherished for its classic loach soup alongside homemade-style banchan, braised spicy chicken, and herbal duck stew.
Tucked along the edge of Changsin-dong near the toy market and Cheonggyecheon stream, Namwon Chueotang carries the unmistakable air of a seasoned Dongmyo neighborhood staple. The dining room fills easily with older regulars nursing midday bottles of soju over bubbling earthenware bowls, though the restaurant operates just as much as a boisterous gathering spot for group feasts. While the signboard advertises *chueotang* (loach soup)—served properly with fresh chives, minced hot peppers, and zesty ground *jepi* powder—the kitchen operates with the depth of a home-style *eomakase*. The owner prepares an ever-rotating spread of side dishes without synthetic seasonings: freshly tossed kimchi, braised seaweed stems, crisp radish cubes, seasoned beansprouts, pan-fried tofu, and, for fortunate regulars, tender rolled omelets. Even everyday staples like *jeyuk bokkeum* (spicy stir-fried pork) arrive balanced and restrained, highlighting a careful ratio of lean meat to fat over heavy, cloying sauces. Yet among repeat visitors, the venue is equally coveted for its large-format sharing dishes, which demand advance phone reservations to account for prep time. The *dakdoritang* (spicy braised chicken) is an imposing centerpiece. Built with tender whole chicken, tender chunks of potato, and a spicy, chili-flecked broth that cooks down tableside, it easily feeds four before the pan is whisked away to make scorched fried rice. For a more restorative alternative, regulars lean toward the *ori baeksuk* (boiled duck), a rich, herbal bird that pairs naturally with makgeolli and seasoned chive salad, finishing cleanly with a bowl of nutty mung bean porridge simmered right into the reserved cooking broth. Open from morning until night, it remains a quintessential Jongno stop for unpretentious, home-cooked nourishment.
