About
A cozy, single-operator pub in Yeokchon-dong serving hearty boiled beef hot pot alongside smoky spicy stir-fried squid.
Tucked into a quiet Eunpyeong alleyway between Gusan and Eungam stations, Yeokchonjib is an intimate neighborhood *yori jujeom* run entirely by a single owner-chef. The exterior features an understated gray wall, while the dimly lit dining room holds just around six dark wood tables anchored by warm accent lamps. With dedicated luggage storage and a remarkably tidy setup, the snug space fills quickly with regulars dropping in for an evening meal or a relaxed second round of drinks. The kitchen rotates its anchor dishes by season, often centering on hearty Korean comfort fare paired with beer, soju, highballs, or discounted daily traditional liquors. A complimentary bowl of crisp purple sweet potato chips lands on the table first, followed by banchan like crunchy pickled *gungchae* (celtuce stem) and a house soy dipping sauce topped with wasabi and fresh cheongyang peppers. The undisputed centerpiece is the *suyuk jeongol*, a rich beef hot pot packed with generous cuts of tender *arong-satae* (beef shank). The meat is simmered alongside mushrooms and mounds of fresh garlic chives in a clean, milky broth that draws out deep beef flavor rather than relying on instant stock powders. Alongside the pot, tables invariably order the *maeun ojingeo-bokkeum* (spicy stir-fried squid). Glossed in a fiery, homestyle glaze with pronounced wok char, the squid stays springy and tender against crisp vegetables. Diners routinely order thick udon noodles to divide between the two dishes, soaking up both the soothing beef soup and the spicy squid seasoning. Beyond the beef and squid staples, the fryer turns out crisp bar bites including octopus *karaage*, croquettes, and deep-fried oysters. Though the menu shifts throughout the year, Yeokchonjib remains a neighborhood fixture defined by generous portions, careful seasoning, and unhurried hospitality.
