About

Veteran chef-led sushi omakase spot in Bangbae-dong known for its high-quality seasonal fish and old-school hospitality.

Tucked away along Donggwang-ro in Bangbae-dong, near Seorae Village, Kikku carries the seasoned confidence of a bygone era. Helmed by a veteran sushi master who built a devoted following back during the restaurant’s original Yongsan days, the discreet counter feels less like a trend-chasing omakase den and more like a quiet neighborhood gem hidden in plain sight. Inside, the weathered counter and compact tables reflect years of disciplined service, welcoming a clientele composed largely of long-time regulars rather than social-media sightseers. The meal begins without pretense: a cluster of crisp raw vegetables, simple banchan, and a silky chawanmushi praised for its clean, pure egg flavor devoid of heavy dashi or soy seasoning. From there, the chef orchestrates a classic parade of seasonal nigiri. The pacing is deliberate, and the rice is measured with precision so the cuts always take center stage. Bluefin tuna arrives in rich cuts of akami and marbled otoro, alongside wild red sea bream, matsukawa tai, and seasonal croaker. A strip of squid topped with fresh sea urchin presents a study in contrasting sweetness, while delicate sweet shrimp (amaebi) and tender pen shell scallop (kaibashira) bridge the ocean flavors. Where the chef’s veteran technique truly shines is in the handling of silver-skinned and cured fish—selections that frequently convert hesitant diners. Gently pickled gizzard shad (shime kohada), mackerel (shime saba), and horse mackerel (aji) deliver balanced acidity and clean oiliness without a hint of fishy edge. Other highlights include abalone simmered for over four hours to achieve a yielding texture, alongside hamo served with a touch of plum. Priced at 80,000 won for lunch and 95,000 won for dinner, Kikku skips the dramatic culinary theatrics of modern Seoul dining in favor of enduring skill, steady hospitality, and deeply rooted craftsmanship.
