About

Legendary gomtang since 1939. Must-visit.

The spoon arrives already nestled in the bowl — a holdover from when diners ate gomtang with nothing but a spoon, no chopsticks. The rice comes pre-soaked in broth, tolyeom-style, and the brass bowl holds heat so fiercely you can burn your fingers lifting it. This is Hadongwan, an 80-year operation that's been serving the same two things since before most Seoul restaurants existed: gomtang and boiled beef. The soup hits clear, not milky, and regulars describe the flavor as something close to concentrated umami overload — one blogger called it "as if someone dumped MSG into the pot," which is the involuntary reaction to beef stock this clarified and this deep. The default gomtang includes intestines and tripe alongside the brisket; if you want meat only, say "고기만" when the server asks. Either way, the beef shreds apart without chewing. The broth arrives unseasoned — add green onions generously from the small dish, then adjust with the table's salt and pepper to taste. Cabbage kimchi and kkakdugi arrive on a single shared plate, both made in-house and noticeably sweet rather than fiery. The standard portion (₩18,000) leaves most people unsatisfied; multiple accounts recommend paying the jump to 특25공 for better meat volume. Rice refills are free, but the draw here is broth, and you'll want to drink it to the bottom. Come before 11:30 AM or after 2 PM on weekdays to skip the 15–30 minute wait. Ordering happens at the counter immediately upon entry, payment upfront, then you're seated. Food arrives in under two minutes. Cash is not accepted.

Local tips

  • Arrive before 11:30 AM or after 2 PM to avoid 15-30 minute waits during lunch rush on weekdays; Saturdays are busier.
  • Order at counter then pay upfront (선결제) before being seated — system is extremely fast (often food arrives within 1-2 minutes).
  • Ask for 고기만 (meat only) when ordering if you don't want offal (양/천엽); default includes internal organs.
  • Recommend 특 25공 (25,000₩) or higher over standard portion — reviewers unanimously suggest the larger size is worth the extra cost for better meat quantity.
  • Table includes salt and pepper; add green onions (파) generously and adjust seasoning to taste as broth arrives unseasoned.
