About

Cozy Korean home-style meal spot in Hwagok serving tidy set meals with grilled pork ribs, salted mackerel, and seasonal banchan.

A short walk from Hwagok Station’s Exit 5, Eunbaekban is a tidy neighborhood spot run by a young crew, catering to those craving honest, home-style Korean meals (*jipbap*). With just about six tables neatly arranged in an intimate room, the vibe is compact and straightforward. Guests place their orders through a self-service kiosk near the entrance before sitting down to an unhurried, multi-dish set meal. The backbone of the menu is its banchan lineup, rotating with fresh seasonal ingredients sourced from across the country. Six small side dishes arrive on the tray alongside rice and soup—varying by visit from lightly seasoned shredded potatoes, seasoned chives, and zucchini to cockles, dried anchovies, bellflower root, or even a fried egg. The seasoning throughout leans clean and restrained rather than heavily salty, making the side dishes easy companions to the main course. The protein selections anchor the feast. The extra-large salted mackerel (*gan-godeungeo*) is a crowd favorite, served tender and exceptionally meaty with a crisp exterior. Pork dishes are equally central: thick-cut samgyeopsal grilled with aromatic minari (water dropwort) balances rich pork fat against fresh herbal crunch, while sweet-savory marinated pork ribs (*yangnyeom dwaeji-galbi*) provide comforting, caramelized bites. For diners craving heat, the spicy squid stir-fry (*ojingeo bokkeum*) features thick, tender rings tossed in a glossy red sauce primed for mixing directly over hot white rice. While the set meal includes a basic everyday broth, diners often choose to upgrade the bowl to a dense, funky cheonggukjang (fermented soybean paste stew) or rich kimchi jjigae for an extra fee. Paired with a shared fish or meat plate, it forms the quintessential modern Korean comfort tray—modest, balanced, and deeply satisfying.
