꼬치오뎅
About
Skewered fish cake bar. Warm broth on cold nights.
The lights drop low inside this Jongno yakitori parlor, and it takes a second to register: there's no server. Just a tablet on your table and a gas burner already heating a shallow pot. Across the room, a dozen strangers crouch over grill marks and melting mayo, jabbing tongs at a self-serve oden bar stocked with fish cakes, konnyaku, and rice cakes floating in steaming dashi. It's the kind of place you stumble into after grilled meat and soju, when the mood shifts from celebration to low-key maintenance drinking. Order through the kiosk and the kitchen sends out skewers: chicken skin crisped until translucent, heart chewy and faintly metallic, thigh glazed with tare and green onion. The scallop-and-chicken-skin gyoza is forgettable, but the grilled cod roe arrives split open, draped over cucumber slices, begging for a smear of mayo and a cold beer. Before anything hits the table, someone drops off peanuts, shrimp crackers, and toasted bread crusts with a pot of whipped cream—odd but effective, sweet against salt. The oden costs ₩2,000 a stick, which feels steep until you realize the broth refills are free and nobody's rushing you out. Slip a ladle of gochugaru into the pot if you want heat. Weeknight crowds are manageable before 9 PM; Fridays and Saturdays, expect a thirty-minute wait with nowhere to sit. Cards only. Exit 1 at Jungang-ro station puts you a one-minute walk away.
