About
Namdaemun traditional. Korean set meals and stews.
Eunho-sikdang opens at 6:05 AM because regulars know the first shift needs fortification, not coffee. A fourth-generation operation founded in 1932, it occupies a narrow storefront in the Namdaemun market warren where galchi alley spills into the wholesale textile blocks. The broth—translucent amber, not milky—has held a Blue Ribbon thirteen consecutive years, and the Seoul municipal future-heritage designation means the recipe cannot pivot for trends. The signature is kkori-gomtang, oxtail simmered until the collagen surrenders but the meat still grips the bone. Two hefty vertebral segments arrive in the bowl, a small dish of soy sauce cut with scallions on the side. Pull the meat with the fork they provide, dip it, eat it between spoonfuls of broth that tastes like beef and time, nothing else. The kitchen refills the broth mid-meal without asking—request somyeon noodles if you want the second act, or just ask for more gukmul and they ladle from the perpetual cauldron. Sooner or later the owner circulates with a thermos, topping everyone up. Bangchi-jjim, the specialty hip-bone braise, requires a day's notice and slow heat; it's a group order at 120,000 won, the one dish that forces advance planning. Weekday mornings before ten-thirty run smooth. Lunch between 11:30 and 1 PM pulls neighborhood office workers in team formation, waits stretch to forty minutes, and solo diners wedge into two-tops without ceremony. After two o'clock the room empties. Weekends close at four. Cards only, no English menu, but the wall chart is numbers and pictures.
Local tips
- Arrive before lunch rush (11:30-13:00) or after 14:00 weekdays to avoid 30-45 min waits.
- Upgrade to 꼬리토막 (+5,000 KRW) for thicker, meatier oxtail pieces — worth the investment.
- Ask for free noodle refills and extra broth (국물) — staff generously top up without extra charge.
- Book 방치찜 (hip bone stew) one day ahead; it requires slow cooking but delivers exceptional depth.
- Bring cash or use card; popular with local office workers for group lunches—reserve via phone for groups over 4.
