Pub Mapo

About

Lively Mangwon-dong pub pairing various draft beers with reasonably priced dried fish snacks and casual drinking bites.

A short walk from Mangwon Market down Mangridang-gil, Geoneomul Lounge reinterprets the traditional Korean dried-fish hof through a contemporary, relaxed lens. Outside, retro typography framed by golden LED bulbs signals the entrance, where folding doors often open wide to pull in the evening breeze. Inside, the space balances the buzz of a late-night pocha with the glow of low-lit chandeliers, creating a welcoming backdrop for neighborhood nightcaps and post-dinner gatherings. The house focus is geoneomul—dried seafood staples paired with cold draft pours like OB Premier, Heineken, and Kozel Dark dusted with a rim of cinnamon and brown sugar. While patrons wait for their orders, bowls of crunchy, spiced fried-chicken-leg snacks (dakdari) land on the table. The most practical introduction is the multi-part dried fish set, which arrives piled with tender semi-dried hanchi (cuttlefish), grilled jwipo (fish jerky), chewy nogari (young pollock), namax, and roasted peanuts. Two dipping sauces flank the platter: a sharp chojang spiked with mayonnaise, and a savory blend of soy sauce, mayonnaise, and diced cheongyang chilies. Beyond the grills, the kitchen leans into classic drinking fare like golbaengi muchim, which trades ordinary thin somyeon for springy jjolmyeon noodles, delivered with plastic prep gloves so guests can toss the whelks and spicy sauce by hand. If thirst shifts toward something sweeter, the table order often moves to the Yogurttung, a frosted tub of orange-hued yogurt sherbet served in an oversized Yakult-style container and scooped with a shovel-shaped spoon. Between the approachable pricing—most plates hover well below the twenty-thousand-won mark—and the easy chatter drifting across small tables, Geoneomul Lounge hits the right register for a second or third round in Mapo.
