Noodles Jung-gu₩₩

About

Famous kongnamul-gukbap. Quick lunch institution.

A 1962 noodle shop with tables for thirty and a six-decade contract for Gangwon yellow soybeans doesn't need to prove anything, but the line on a weekday at 1 PM says it anyway. The floor is cramped, the only banchan is kimchi, and the kongguksu costs sixteen thousand won — about the price of a decent lunch set in this part of Jung. Walk past City Hall station exit 9, turn onto a side street near municipal parking lots, and the queue forms naturally around the unmarked door. The broth is the whole story: thick as cream soup, faintly tan from peanut butter and pine nuts blended into the soybean base, already salted and sweetened so no condiment bottles clutter the table. The noodles are jungmyeon gauge — thicker than you expect, chewy enough to hold their shape even after soaking in that heavy liquid. The kimchi isn't the usual summer yeolmu; it's a sweet-spicy baechukimchi that one blog called "sweet before hot," deliberately matched to cut through all that richness. You pay at the table the moment you sit — card or cash, the ajumma returns it without looking — and the bowl arrives in under five minutes. Salt and sugar are available if you ask, but the kitchen has already committed. Skip the 11:30 rush or the weekend entirely unless you enjoy standing in direct sun. The kongguksu runs March through mid-November; after that, the menu shifts to stews and grilled pork. Weekday afternoons after two see almost no wait. Sundays the place is dark.

Local tips

  • Arrive before 11:30 AM or after 2 PM on weekdays to avoid 20-40 minute waits; peak lunch rush is unavoidable on weekends.
  • Cash or card accepted; prepay at counter immediately after seating—staff will bring card back to table with rapid service.
  • Try the house kimchi as-is first; its sweet-savory balance elevates the entire dish, and refills are free.
  • Kongguksu served March–November only; salt/sugar available on request but broth is perfectly seasoned straight from kitchen.
  • Reserve a table via CatchTable during summer peak season or call 02-753-5388 directly for better planning, especially weekends.
