About

Long-running Hawolgok-dong staple serving rich bone-broth budae jjigae and hefty cheese rolled omelets since 2002.

Operating out of Hawolgok-dong near Wolgok Station since 2002, Nammae Budae Jjigae has quietly anchored the neighborhood’s comfort-food circuit for over two decades. Tucked into an L-shaped ground-floor space that stretches deceptively deep, the dining room carries the unhurried warmth of a veteran neighborhood haunt, welcoming everyone from lone diners tucking into single-portion stews to local residents and Dongduk Women’s University students. The centerpiece is the *wonjo budae jjigae* (original army stew), built on a slow-simmered *sagol* (beef bone) broth. Rather than leaning purely into processed-meat richness, the soup balances its ham and sausages with a heavy hand of well-fermented, sour kimchi. The result bridges the gap between classic kimchi stew and traditional budae jjigae: tangy, robust, and clean rather than cloying. Portions ordered for two or more come with a complimentary ramen packet, which absorbs the bubbling, crimson broth. Generous bowls of white rice are included and refillable, pairing naturally with side dishes that have remained unchanged for years—most notably an addictive, al dente stir-fried fish cake (*eomuk bokkeum*) with an assertive, savory chew. Equally essential is the *cheese gyeran mari* (rolled omelet). A colossal centerpiece crafted from roughly eight eggs, it arrives thick, pillowy, and molten at the core with melted cheese, offering an ideal foil to the simmered stew's sour, peppery edges. Service moves at a rapid clip, with stew pots often hitting burners within five minutes of ordering. Guests frequently drift toward the self-service station to ladle cups of complimentary iced plum (*maesil*) slush, an icy palate cleanser that regulars sip both before lifting their spoons and on the stroll back out to the street.
